One of the main reasons for the constant increase in the cost of healthcare globally is overutilisation of medical services, also referred to as overtreatment or overuse. Medical overuse is the provision of medical services that are more likely to cause harm than good, and it is a widespread phenomenon in both high-income and low-income countries. Healthcare market players are well aware of the risks and challenges that overutilisation brings such as harm to patients and locking financial resources unnecessarily, but very few are implementing effective methods to reduce this waste. In this presentation, we will discuss the different aspects of over utilisation internationally, common areas where it occurs and the main driving forces for overutilisation.
We will present an effective approach to avoid or at least reduce overutilisation by a systematic process involving clinical specialists and data driven insight and analytics, and how to assure that proper clinical factors are considered when deciding on a medical necessity. This suggested approach delivers improved healthcare provisioning, it advances value-based healthcare and promotes the use of Evidence Based Medicine for determining medical necessity.
The presentation will be concluded by discussing recent examples that demonstrate the benefits and value to companies and their success in reducing overutilisation levels.
