Mats Sundgren


Mats Sundgren, PhD, MSc, is a Principal Scientist in Global Medicine Development, AstraZeneca R&D. He is based in AstraZeneca R&D Mõlndal Sweden and has more than 29 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry (Discovery, Development, IT, Marketing, and Patents). He is currently working within Biometrics & Information Science function in the area of R&D strategy focusing on implementing strategies and pilots for bridging Health Information Technology with clinical research. He has leaded the EFPIA (European Federation of Pharmaceutical Association) EHR (Electronic Health Records) task force, and has been the AZ representative in developing the IMI (Innovative Medicine Initiative) Knowledge Management research pillar. Mats is Coordinator for the on-going IMI EHR4CR research project ( aiming to development of business models for getting sustainable and scalable solutions for re-using health data for clinical research across Europe. He is also a Senior Research Fellow at Chalmers University of Technology & IT University of Gothenburg, Sweden, in areas of Innovation Management, Medical Informatics and eHealth, and a member of evaluation board for VINNOVA (The Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems). In this area he recently co-published a book Venturing into the Bioeconomy (Palgrave, 2011) based from three case studies in the pharmaceutical industry, the biotechnology industry and the domain of academic research. New technoscientific frameworks that have not yet translated into new therapies, in the future, may play a more central role in the late-modern society.
